Welcome to the Inaugural 2008 Ventura Buccaneers Youth Football Season!

What a great day we had at sign ups yesterday! Despite the fact that little league baseball celebrated opening ceremonies all across the city, we managed to maintain a steady flow of new Buccaneers throughout the day. With only 2 sign ups held, we have filled all 7 teams and we just might have enough players in the bantam division to create an eighth. We are thrilled to have such a great group of people behind the chapter, we would not have been able to achieve such great success without the help of each and every volunteer!

As our last sign up drew to a close, I reflected on the conversation that Dave and I had last year about creating a high quality youth football chapter that would give players and families in Ventura a choice. I remember thinking about the amount of hard work that would go into making our idea a reality and hoping that what we set out to create could be accomplished is such a short period of time. After seeing all of the quality people step forward to contribute their help, all the excited new Buccaneers at registration and the final enrollment numbers showing almost 200 players strong, I came to the realization that our vision was ALIVE!

The “X” Factor

On Tuesday February 26, 2008, the Gold Coast Youth Football League board of directors agreed to implement the exciting new “X” Player designation allowing a much broader segment to participate in youth football. The “X” Player rule, which is now in effect for the 2008 season, will allow senior division players who are over the max weight limits to now participate.

After league certification, senior players that exceed the league weight limits for their age group will be designated as an “X” player and will be subject to the rules set forth y the league. All seniors designated as an “X” Player will be required to wear a highly visible helmet sticker that is approved by the GCYFL. There will only be 3 “X” Players allowed on the field from each team at any given time. These players are REQUIRED to play as interior linemen only and are not to be ball carriers. In addition, is was voted that “X” Players will not be allowed to participate on Kickoff or Kickoff return teams. [Read more...]
